  • More on Naming Conventions and Patterns

    Thursday, August 07, 2003
I read a comment from Jonne Kats in my last naming rant and of course clicked on the link to the blog to check it out. This entry (even though it's not directly related) reminded me of another pet peeve of mine. This one's a bit more controversial, so maybe we can get some SQL guys in there to help me what an idiot I am! ;) I think databases and OOP are very much related. A table is like a class. Each field in that table is a Property of the table, etc. How can people not think this
  • DataSet.HasChanges()

    Thursday, August 07, 2003
So I'm sitting here writing like a madman for one of my chapters talking about ADO.NET, currently discussing DataSets. Throughout the chapter I rave about the naming conventions, patterns, etc that Microsoft used throughout the framework, making it really easy to tell what Properties and Methods are going to do without ever looking at the documention. I also suggest to follow these patterns and conventions when making your own “stuff”. Well then I come along and am looking through a list of all the Properties and Methods of the DataSet Class and low and behold I come across the HasChanges()

  • <OffTopic(True)> Public MustOverride Sub SpecializedBlogs()

    Wednesday, August 06, 2003
I took my gf out to eat and to a movie for her birthday the other day and realized that I really liked the idea a lot of “expecting mother“ blogs. I mean think about it. You could have a collection of blogs, where soon to be moms could post how things are going, start a little community, get tips (FeedBack) from mothers who have already been through it, etc. My intentions were nothing but good with that idea. My gf (we've been together for over 4 years now and have been talking about getting married for a while now)

  • RE: To WebService or Not to WebService

    Wednesday, August 06, 2003
In a recent entry I talked about (and also posed some questions) WebServices and when and when not to use them. The answer came out to be both. Brian and Alex had some good points! I'm now just going to skip the WebService reference in my ASP.NET application completely and just reference my business layer instead. I was originally just thinking from a consistancy point it would be good to have them both reference the WebService, just in different ways, but their points changed my mind. I already have my business and data layers seperate, so this will be no
  • So this whole "work" thing is necessary...but where and how?

    Tuesday, August 05, 2003
Darren continues his ongoing entries related to what type of company you'd like to work at. Very interesting subject...love it! :) I've only been an independent consultant since January and I've already seen every pro and con that he mentioned except the con of "broader, less focussed skillset". I've been lucky enough to focus wherever I damn well please so far (this might change as time goes by however), but I would definitely imagine most others in this field have become more broad as he mention. "We lie loudest when we lie to ourselves" Excellent quote and I totally agree!

  • To WebService or Not to WebService

    Tuesday, August 05, 2003
Maybe I'm just the wandering idiot in this community, but I have no idea why this didn't hit me until a few days ago. Quite often I find myself struggling over wheather or not to use WebServices in cases I'd like to expose my main logic and data to a few different interfaces. WebServices are great for this, however, can add a lot of bloat and extra baggage that can degrade performance. So, like others, I weigh this in my head a lot. Well, a few days ago I was working on a “secret” new community project in my spare

Scoble's freakin' about his computer talking to him and especially, that he and his wife are talking back! :-| But what if you woke up in the morning and asked your computer to tell you what you had scheduled today and any important news? Or what if you were in your living room and while on a commercial break, asked “Are there any new blog entires I'd be interested in?“ and your TV did a picture in picture of the channel you were watching and some new blog entries that had come in? mmmmm...those are a bunch of sexy thoughts

  • "Why do you speak?"

    Sunday, August 03, 2003
Jerry Dennany posted a comment in my last entry: “So, you are a presenter at user groups? That's pretty cool, and I think that takes guts. Why do you present, though? I understand what the audience gets out of it, but what do you get out of it?” That's a great question! I would imagine that there are a lot of different reasons that all speakers have. Here are a few reasons why I do it. First and biggest reasons is I LOVE .NET! I've been programming since highschool (Turbo Pascal 7.0 on DOS) and since I've started I've always
